Grand Opening Celebration

Saturday, October 12, 2013, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

The Gala Grand Opening Ceremony in front of the SLORRM's Freight House took place at high noon. The program included comments by SLORRM Board Members, a Union Pacific Representative and SLO Mayor Jan Marx. Local Boy Scouts provided a flag corp and the ceremony started with the singing of the National Anthem. A City Proclamation and ribbon cutting closed the ceremony which was followed with free cake for everyone! The backdrop for this festive celebration featured the box cars and Freight House that were decorated with red, white and blue bunting and balloons. The Central Coast Brass performed before, during and after the ceremony. Ballooney the Clown greeted the kids at the Freight House from 1:15 until 3:00pm. This entire event was part of the Central Coast Railroad Festival weekend.

Special Display: Larry Saslaw's N-scale Donner Pass display is a 4-foot by 22-foot "Bend Track" modular layout. The "Bend Track" concept is based on a two-sided module with a double mainline on both sides and an optional center divider which can serve as a scenery backdrop for both sides. When a center divider is installed, it is similar to having two traditional modules assembled back to back with no space between the two. This display has three 6-foot (two-sided) sections and one 4-foot section depicting the Overland Route in California. The layout has double-tracked scenes of the Yolo Bypass trestle near Davis, the Sierra foothills and the Sierra Nevada high country that includes Long Ravine, wooden and concrete snow sheds and the cliffs between Soda Springs and Yuba Gap.

Several presentations were given in the Museum over the course of the two days.
