Heroines of the Rails

Saturday, March 24, 2018

In recognition of March being National Women's History Month, on Saturday the 24th at 3pm, the Museum will present a brief overview of the history of women in railroading, from the earliest days to the present. Many but not all women workers 100 years ago had what today would be considered menial roles. There were notable exceptions. Even among the stereotypical roles, there were some surprises, including right here on the Coast Route. In recent decades this male-dominated industry has become much more diverse.

Some of the early exceptions were more fictional than real. A few of those will be featured in three short movies from the silent film era. In one, an actress playing the heroine is reported to have done her own stunts, and one is a doozy.
